Since we are located on ATV/Snowmobile Trail # 7, the Steel Trading Post also makes for a make an excellent departure and destination point in the winter and the summer.

Our roots go back to 1876 when outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Poker Alice came to town looking for gold and a good time.

We still know how to have a good time today from our free Wild West re-enactments to our wild nightlife. Be a player in our gaming halls and feel like a teenager again as you go wild at our live concerts and comedy shows.

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore, located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, is one of the most famous attractions in North Dakota and a symbol of American history. This majestic mountain impresses with its enormous sculptures of the United States presidents.

Elevation And Meaning
The Mount Rushmore sculpture was created between 1927 and 1941 by the renowned sculptor Gutzon Borglum. It portrays the faces of four presidents who played significant roles in the country's development: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Each face reaches a height of approximately 18 meters.

Located a 1-hour drive from the Steel Wheel Campground, Crazy Horse is worth seeing. If you're planning a drive to Mount Rushmore, we highly suggest adding the 20-minute drive to your trip.

Steel Wheel Campground & Cabins is located on US Hwy 385, just 6 miles south of historic Deadwood, South Dakota. We’re centrally located in the Black Hills, near major landmarks like Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and numerous ATV/snowmobile trails, lakes, and hiking paths.

We offer a variety of accommodations including full hookup RV sites (30/50 amp), electric-only RV sites, camping cabins, and park model cabins. Please note that pets are welcome at campsites but not allowed inside cabins.

Yes! From Memorial Day through Labor Day, our deli and food court serve a variety of meals, beverages, and daily specials—perfect for guests who prefer to dine on-site.

Absolutely. UTV and Roxor rentals are available on-site through Mad Peak Rentals. Trail passes can be purchased at the Trading Post, and road permits for ATVs are available through the Lawrence County Treasurer’s office.

We offer 3 Mbps wireless internet to all guests. AT&T 4G coverage is reliable, and we provide a Verizon booster near the camp store to improve connectivity for other carriers.

Yes, pets are welcome at campsites as long as they are leashed and never left unattended outside. However, pets are not allowed in cabins. Please clean up after your pet—failure to follow the policy may result in removal from the campground.
